Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a structured talking therapy which can be used to treat Depression and Anxiety Disorders such as Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Social Anxiety and Panic Disorder. It is not like ‘counselling’ where you talk and your therapist listens. Your CBT therapist will want to help you uncover the processes which underlie your problems, specifically your patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Once you have explored these your therapist will work with you to find new ways of solving your problems. CBT is very active and it is a partnership between you and your therapist. It focuses on the ‘here and now’ more than it does your past. CBT requires you to try out new techniques and strategies both in the sessions and on your own at home.

Behavioural Activation (BA)

BA is an intervention for depression, commonly used when someone is de-motivated and inactive. It is a very structured and systematic therapy. Initially your therapist will work with you to ‘map out’ the cycle you are stuck in and then help you to use clear strategies to break the cycle and begin to do the things that bring you a sense of achievement and enjoyment. BA does not focus on what we think but is focused on what we do or do not do and how it makes us feel. Like CBT it is focused on the present and does require practice at home.

Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT)

CFT is a more recently developed therapy, it has its roots in CBT alongside other approaches such as social psychology, neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, developmental psychology and Buddhist philosophy (Mindfulness).  It is often used to treat complex trauma (Type II PTSD) but is becoming quite commonplace in treating persistent depression, low self-esteem and other disorders.  The aim of CFT is to help people to develop a more healthy way of relating to themselves by recognising self-attack and self-criticism as unhelpful and learning to be more compassionate.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)

IPT is one of the short term structured therapies for the treatment of depression. It usually it involves 12 to 16 sessions of about an hour and looks at the ways relationships contribute to psychological difficulties.
The therapy involves focusing upon one or two issues connected to past or present relationships with other people that are triggering or maintaining depression.
IPT has been proven to be effective for the treatment of depression in clinical research trials. The UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) states that IPT may be considered as an alternative to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for the treatment of moderate to severe depression.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to the present moment, using techniques like meditation, breathing and yoga. It helps us become more aware of our thoughts and feelings so that, instead of being overwhelmed by them, we’re better able to manage them.
Over time, mindfulness brings about long-term changes in mood and levels of happiness and wellbeing. Scientific studies have shown that mindfulness not only prevents depression, but that it also positively affects the brain patterns underlying day-to-day anxiety, stress, depression and irritability, so that when these feelings arise, they dissolve away again more easily. Other studies have shown that regular meditators see their doctors less often and spend fewer days in hospital. Memory improves, creativity increases and reaction times become faster.
